1.5.2 After Your Mobility Period

Once your internship is over you might be wondering what is next. No matter what you choose to do after the internship, it is important to make the most out of it for your future professional steps in the world of work.

  • First of all express your interest in getting hired by the company where you did the internship, if this is a possibility - if a short term position was a worthwhile experience for you and you are interested in working for the organization in a full-time capacity, let your supervisor know.
  • Ask for a written recommendation that you can keep and use in future job searches do not rely on the fact that you can ask for a recommendation whenever you need it in the future. First your supervisor may be having hard time remembering you and how well you did at the job, second remember that employee transition is relatively common: your supervisor may decide to move on from the company and you don't want to lose a record of what you have done.
  • Update your resume and ask your supervisor to help you in describing what you've done - your supervisor should be able to help you articulate the impact of the concrete tasks you've performed
  • Try to stay in touch – it is always good to have a wider network of contacts, try to keep your contact with your supervisor and colleagues; on the one hand you can try to come back working for the company in the future if you are interested, on the other you can provide the company with help, advise, advertising wherever you move on, which will be valued.
  • reflect on what you've learned: how did the internship help you refine your career goals of what you do and do not want to do.
