3.2 Work based Learning: Concept and Benefits
3.2.3 Benefits of WBL for Companies

Apart from being beneficiary to students, WBL can offer companies a wide range of benefits as well, depending, of course, on their size and sector. By offering opportunities for WBL, companies are provided with the chance to collaborate with schools, institutes, and universities and to have an active part on the training of students and future potential employees by getting involved in the curriculum development process. This gives an important role to companies in addressing the skills gap and shortages between the provided education and the labour market, and improves their social image by sharing their culture and making them accessible to young people.

It is highly possible that companies will have financial benefits from WBL. Firstly, by taking part in the educational process of potential future employees, companies will be able to recruit better and more suitable skilled employees, and will thus need less time to train them after recruitment. In fact, companies will be able to get acquainted with potential employees and have an insight into whether the participants possess the desired characteristics for the job. Furthermore, research shows that employees who have conducted some kind of training in a specific company are more likely to stay and work with the latter, as they feel a sense of loyalty and commitment and seek more opportunities for personal and professional development.

Moreover, most European studies have shown that WBL can have a positive effect in productivity, as many former WBL participants that were recruited required less training time, executed work tasks in a better and quicker way, and had already been acquainted with the company’s workflow and culture. In addition, new young people that enter the workforce of the company even temporarily, besides offering help with the workload, can provide a fresh way of thinking, come up with creative ideas and bring with them new perspectives and specialized skills, helping in the development of new or existing projects and motivating other company employees as well.

It has to be mentioned that benefits for employers can range from immediate to mid-term and long-term depending on the case. In order to reap potential benefits from WBL, employers must be well aware of its factors and contents and the whole process has to be organized and closely monitored by one or more members of the personnel who possess adequate knowledge on the subject, in cooperation with the school teacher. This way the company will be able to mentor the participants and all parties will enjoy the benefits.
